While you're enjoying the last few days of sunshine before the winter chill kicks in, its at about this time of year that your skin will start to change and your foundation just doesn't cut it anymore. It might be that your skin tone is too light for your summer shade or your foundation needs more moisture heading into the windy months ahead. This post should help you find a foundation to give your skin what it needs to help you look fab from AM to PM.
I hear you! Its hard to shop cruelty free cosmetics on a budget and at a convenient location for those last minute beauty emergencies... I have been there and even though we buy with the best of intentions, sometimes we don't realise that the brands we are buying from actually do test on our furry friends because they are getting so good at hiding it.
So it's time to clear the air and let you know exactly which brands are cruelty free at one of our favourite, go-to, easy to find, last minute beauty stores: Priceline.
In no particular order, some of my faves are:
As time goes on I'll continue to update and improve this list, so feel free to comment below if I have missed any.
There are some amazing products out there from tested brands, they perform at the highest level and work a dream but like many of us, I prefer products that haven't been tested on fluffy animals. And with brands coming out with new fan dangled things all the time, its easy to find a substitute if you know what you are looking for. So I have found the 5 top tested makeup products that have amazing duplicates out there just waiting to be discovered. Here goes!
Bioderma > Embryolisse Micellar Water
So there are few products out there that are literally in every makeup artists kit. Bioderma is it. A high performing water cleanser removes makeup and residue without any irritation what so ever.
I have only recently discovered that this is a tested product and it actually hurts a little because I love this product so much. I like the packaging, the consistency and all the rest but its tested.
So what replaces this holy grail product?
The Embryolisse brand actually makes a killer Micellar water. And bonus! It's cheaper! It's available at Online, Selected Salons and some makeup schools and boutiques. Remove your makeup and clean your skin while keeping a clean conscience too!
Benefit Hoola Bronzer > Cover FX Blot Powder
The Hoola Bronzer is a cult classic. It's a great colour, texture and the packaging is super cute, but for the animal lovers out there, Benefit is a no-go brand. Luckily, the amazing Cover FX Blotting Powderis a great alternative. It comes in a compact with a mirror which is always a bonus and the colour is amazing. I like Medium for skin tones like Reese Witherspoon, Anne Hathaway and Nicole Kidman. Deep is for the Golden Goddesses who share their colouring with the genetically blessed realm like Charlize Theron.
You'll find Cover FX at Sephora store and online as well as my favourite makeup suppliers, PM Studio.
Revlon Colour Stay Liquid Foundation > Too Faced Born This Way Foundation
I used this foundation when I was in High School before I really got into makeup and serious about Cruelty Free Beauty. I loved this stuff, it stayed all day, the colour was good and I could find it pretty much anywhere. It's such a bummer than Revlon tests as they have some great products. But luckily there is Too Faced Born This Way Foundation to fill the hole in your makeup bag.
Too Faced is a completely cruelty free brand and big with the YouTuber generation thanks to people like Nikki-Tutorials and MannyMUA. This foundation quickly rose to fame, and for good reasons. Its build-able in coverage, has a great range of colours and sits beautifully on the skin without being cakey or breaking down through the day.
You can find this at Mecca store and online. Have a chat to the lovely ladies and gents in store and you'll fall head over heels for this foundation.
OPI Nail Polish > RMS Nail Polish
Nail polish... I swear everything can be tested on animals apparently. Last time I checked, my puppy Luna didn't need her toes painted, so why is it being tested on our Furry Friends!?
Most of the major brands are tested (sad face!). Essie, OPI, Revlon, Maybelinne, Sally Hansen. So where do you turn for good quality Nail polish in all our fave shades? RMS Beauty is your answer.
All your classic shades as well as a few fun ones in there too, and for $22, you can't complain about the price. Not only is it cruelty free, its also vegan, free of petrochemicals, parabens and a whole heap of other nasties our nail beds absorb.
Chanel Boy Lipstick > Shanghai Suzy Miss Leah Baby Cocoa
There is something about a perfect nude lipstick that makes you feel sexy and casual all rolled into one. For so long, Chanel has held the reins on the perfect nude lipstick, but not any more. A fairly new brand to the Australian market is Shanghai Suzy. They are an on trend, cruelty free and funky brand based from Melbourne selling a range of colours and formulas in their lipsticks.
Miss Leah Baby Cocoa was in production for about six months a few seasons back as a part of the summer range and now its permanent! No more stock piling required! You'll find these at lots of stockists around the country as well as on their online store. They all smell amazing and they are just $14.95. Bargain!
Disclaimer: These products are to the best of my knowledge, based on the research I have made online and in person, cruelty free at the time of this post. Please be aware that brands have been known to switch between tested and not tested and as a result this information can become outdated. To be sure, please check with the brand directly to confirm cruelty free status.
I'm so excited to be writing about this cult skin care product. So many people swear by Sunday Riley's products and achieve amazing results so I figured I would have a try as well.
My skin is congested with years of slap happy skincare and quick fix products (apart from my amazing pre wedding skin care regime - now three years married. Skin is full of Macdonalds and Coca-cola all over again...) so I really wanted to see what was possible with Good Genes. I had heard 'Once you try it, You'll be hooked' and 'Best thing ever' from friends and colleagues so I went and grabbed a bottle from Mecca Cosmetica and kept my fingers crossed.
What makes it so speschh?
Here is the speel from Mecca Online:
"This daily transforming face treatment and mask is formulated with 5% purified grade, anti-ageing lactic acid, lemongrass and licorice to exfoliate and plump the look of fine lines, to reveal a brighter, smoother and more refined complexion. Long term use can help to restore the appearance of damaged and uneven skin tone, reduce the visible depth of line and wrinkles and increase skin's firmness and elasticity."
The lactic acid, lemon grass and liquorice is what makes this product so effective. By gently exfoliating the surface of your skin the active ingredients are able to penetrate deeper into the skin to get rid of the bad stuff and make your skin feel fresh, clean and soft. You'll feel a slight tingle in some areas, but it won't burn. Lactic Acid is gentle and the most hydrating of all the acids you'll find in skin care so there is no need to call Hazmat. Put down the phone and enjoy this!
My experience so far
So my skin is a combination of dehydrated and normal skin types. So I tend to get a bit oily on my nose and everywhere else feels normal to dry. I hate bumps and lumps and pimples so I pick, squeeze and scratch anything I can which meant the first part of my experience with Good Genes was incredibly frustrating.
The first week I probably over did it. I loved the feeling so I applied it morning and night where I really only need it once per day. As a result the purge period (where everything starts coming out of your skin) came with a vengeance. I had big, sore blind pimples the size of my fist coming out in areas where I had the most congestion. These things were massive. I'm talking huge, they have their own post code, can feel a heart beat, want to run and hide massive! But two weeks later and man am I glowing!
It's tinted moisturiser for me everyday now, no more foundation. My skin is smooth, fresh and I'm getting compliments on my skin! That is something that would only usually happen with some serious makeup preparations. There are still a few bumps coming up but they aren't the blind pimples I had a few weeks ago. Redness has settled, any picking I did is healed or healing and I feel confident enough to walk around bare faced.
Whats the Catch?
Like with any product containing Lactic Acid, you need to wear a good quality high protection sunscreen every day. And what is in your foundation isn't good enough. As the product removes your pigmentation and scarring, you are opening yourself up to sun damage all over again by not wearing SPF. Lactic Acid increases your sensitivity to the sun so it is so important in our climate and with our harsh sun that you screen up!
The other thing you must remember is that this is a treatment, not a moisturiser so its important to still hydrate your skin. I'm yet to try the Sunday Riley Luna Night Oil but after the amazing results I've had with Good Genes, its most definitely next on my list. In the mean time I'm wearing a tinted moisturiser from Laura Mercier daily as well as sunscreen to hydrate and protect my skin.
This little gem will set your back $154 from Mecca either online or in store.
Sunday Riley does not test on Animals!
Use it once daily, either in the morning or at night after cleansing and before moisturising

In my makeup kit for photoshoots and event makeups, Living Luminiser is the best thing to give glow to the skin without looking sweaty and greasy. The Buriti Bronzer is also a must for sun kissed glowing skin.
I'm a sucker for a good lipgloss. When Kate Johnson contacted me to try out her new Cruelty Free lip glosses of course I said yes! These suckers arrived and that same day I knew I just had to use them immediately.
Now for those of you who don't know Kate, allow me to introduce you. You would recognise her as the gorgeous model who stepped onto the Aussie scene in 2008. And yes she is a stunner but she is also a cruelty free beauty advocate, savvy business chic and involved in more charitable and community efforts than you can poke a stick at. I recently met Kate while working with an amazing team of creatives in Sydney. As the creative director of the shoot, she of course nailed the whole operation and came out all smiles, managing a huge team, making each decision perfectly and effortlessly. If only I was this graceful!
So now that we are all friends lets get to the goodies!
Now for the review
To be honest, there isn't much to say about these awesome glosses except for that they are well... awesome!
Like I said, awesome.
If you want to get your hands on some of these beauties, head to the Kate Johnson website or click here. Don't forget to share the love on instagram with #purfectlychic and share with @thekatejonhson_
Check out the pic below, Hair and makeup by me on stunner Chevelle. This babe is wearing lip gloss in shade 'Parisian Lace'. Its pretty Purfect.
Bye for now!
(I would blow a kiss, but I already applied my gloss. Wouldn't want it to go to waste!)
I was recently introduced to this brand while assisting another makeup artist on an editorial job. What caught my attention was the clean packaging and then I heard the story behind the brand.
Rose-Marie Swift is a makeup artist of over 35 years. Her work has graced the pages of Vogue, Harpers, iD, Marie Claire (just to hit the tip of her mega career iceberg). A few years ago, Rose-Marie started having some serious health issues due to Heavy Metals like Aluminium, Barium, Cadmium and more present in her blood. As is turns out, these metals were pulled into her blood stream through cosmetics! After getting back to being healthy and realising the dangers of chemicals in cosmetics and beauty products, She created RMS Beauty. A Natural, Raw, Organic line of beauty products and makeup free from chemicals and full of skin food ingredients.
Uncover-up (Foundation / Concealer Hybrid)
The name really says it all. This product is part concealer, part foundation, part invisible super hero. This Coconut Oil based product is "Formulated to reveal and enhance healthier looking skin…not just cover it up."
The Nitty Gritty:
Choose between seven shades from Snow White (Shade 000) to deep warm mahogany/tan (Shade 55) to find a colour that suits your needs. As this is a sheer product you could most likely get away with a shade either side of your perfect colour if needed (and from my experience it doesn't oxidise after a few hours so you shouldn't turn from perfect to problemo by lunch).
This is the great thing about the RMS products. They aren't rigid in their use. You're free to mix up and create your perfect You! I love using the Un-coverup as my barely there, woke up like this, God! I look great concealer. The texture is creamy enough to just apply and blend either with your finger, a beauty blender or a buffing brush for a fuller coverage over larger areas. And its as simple as that. You can set with a powder if you want a more matte finish (RMS also make a line of mineral loose powders) or you can leave it by itself for a more balmy look.
Where Can I find RMS Beauty?
In Australia you can find RMS Beauty at Mecca Cosmetica either in store or online, and on the RMS Beauty Website.
How much are we talking?
RMS Beauty is definitely in the premium price range, and for a reason. It is something that is not available in another version at your local chemist, department store or beauty parlour. This is skin food in makeup.
As a side note - you need so little of the un-coverup per application that you are likely to get the same amount of time from this little pot as you would from a bottle of liquid foundation.
Find out more about RMS from their website here, or check out Mecca Cosmetica to get your hands on some of their goodies today.
